Father Mike has lived his life helping others. After completing his degree in mathematics and chemistry from UW-Stevens Point he became a teacher in a small public school. He taught there for 4 years until the school closed, then taught another 4 years for the Blessed Sacrament Fathers. He loved teaching, but he had the persistent question: “What more can I do?”
He entered the novitiate with many of his former students, then studied philosophy at John Carroll University. The Superior General asked him to study theology at the British seminary for late vocations in Rome. On August 15, 1970 Fr. Mike was ordained at St. Mary Margaret Church in Waupaca, WI and said his first Mass at his home parish of St. Joseph’s in Crandon, WI.
Fr. Mike continued to teach. He taught 1 year at the minor seminary until it closed, then 6 years at St. Mary’s High School in Menasha, WI. Afterwards, he spent 26 years of pastoral ministry at St. Mary’s in Menasha, WI; St. Charles Borromeo in Albuquerque, NM; Notre Dame in Chicago, IL; and St. Martin de Porres in Taylorsville, UT. Each place provided its own experiences and wonderfully faithful and loving people.
Fr. Mike “retired” to become the Spiritual Director at Saint Ann’s Shrine. His desire to help people and teach are still strong and this shows in his efforts at Saint Ann’s Shrine. He is a blessing and inspiration to everyone who has the privilege to know him. In Fr. Mike’s own words, “Thank you Jesus. It has been a wonderful 40 years!”
