Memorial of Saint Catherine of Siena, Virgin & Doctor of the Church
We focus on one of the great lay doctors of the church who had a Dominican charism that called her to preach and write for the betterment of the Body of Christ. Today’s first reading, used for our own holy founder’s solemnity Mass each year, reminds us that we are to be the perfect community of care and concern, encouraging others by our faithful stewardship to one another. We think of our own Congregation’s Rule of Life 17:
Like Jesus, we wish to live a life of poverty. We work to earn our keep and to share what we have with our brothers. By putting all our resources in common, we free ourselves from all attachment to riches so that we may depend entirely upon God. Our life is marked by simplicity and moderation.
Through Saint Catherine’s moderation and devotion to prayer, she would write and share her words to encourage popes to pious hometown folks so they too could share their troubles, cares, and all their resources in common. As Jesus says in today’s Gospel, she knew that everyone who believes will be lifted from their issues and challenges and, through them, have eternal life. This world is not the ending place for us! We are born from above and return to above from our gracious life of service here on earth.
Catherine influenced so many things in the church and society, even “Italian” literature. Her actions led to her constant prayer, writing, and busyness in building up the church. Exhausted by her rigorous fasting and care, she died on this day, knowing that eternal life was secure from the Christ who promised salvation to those who believed and did God’s will. May we fast from items that keep us from experiencing full grace and grow in our stewardship of the church’s mission, too.
Prayer
O God of all abundance, in your gentle care, you guide us to the resources that matter most. Help us discern your will and be of true service from our many gifts. Inspire us to view the things of heaven and not worry or be anxious over the issues of earth. Through Christ our Lord.
